Understanding Body Mass Index

 

One of the leading causes of heart disease nowadays is obesity, but most of us wind up needing to rely on our doctors to let us know what our body mass index is. In this article, I will show you how to identify the body mass index, along with how to perform formulas to find out what would be your normal weight for your height.

Since we are three-dimensional human beings, our height and our ideal weight don’t scale based on a single ratio. Rather, as our height increases, our ideal weight actually squares. So, for instance, a person 1.5 times the height of someone else would have an ideal weight 2.5 times the other’s ideal weight.

Body Mass Index was developed within the metric system, so I’ll give that calculation first, as it is often a a lot simpler formula.

Fit or Fat?

Say what now? If you are fit and have some very good sexy lean feminine muscle then you’ll show up as extra fat on the BMI scale. This is so due to the fact it does not carry into account you body fat percentage.

Since muscle weighs much more than fat, it will say you’ve a high BMI. But clearly you’re not fat.

What you really have to have is a calculation that does carry into account your body’s excess fat percentage… and here’s where the dilemma is.

BMI = Height (in feet) / Weight (in pounds) squared

You just need to divide your height through the square of the weight. For those making use of the  American system, one more number requirements needs to be added to correct for the this system:

Determining Your Body Fat

It is surprisingly difficult to calculate your body’s extra fat percentage. You can use calipers which do a great job but you should get the measurement from several places on your body.

BMI = (Height (in inches) * 703 ) / Weight (in pounds) squared

So, for this system, you multiply your height by 703, and then divide it by the square of your weight.

Finally, I’ll show you how to figure out what weight should be your ideal target. The BMI index, according to the U.S. National Institute of Health, has the following categories: If you have a BMI less than 18.5, you might be underweight. If your BMI is between 18.5 to 24.9, you’ve standard weight. When yours is between 25 to 29.9, you are considered to be overweight, and if your BMI is 30 or more, you are technically obese.
